For the past 25 years, MARK ARBEIT has chased, captured and manipulated light to create a complex and powerful oeuvre that includes portraiture, fashion, landscape, nudes and the artist's studio.

Born in Chicago in 1953, Arbeit was raised in Northern California. When Arbeit was 16, the family moved to Oahu, Hawaii, and the beauty of islands awakened Arbeit's senses.  At 18, Arbeit enrolled in the University of Hawaii to study art and photography. A few years later, he decided to focus solely on photography, and transferred to the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. During his third year there, he met HELMUT NEWTON through a mutual friend. Newton took Arbeit on as an assistant, and Arbeit looked to Newton as a 'photo guru’.

Upon finishing his studies, Arbeit moved to New York, and was hired by IRVING PENN as a studio assistant. Again, Arbeit approached his work as an apprentice, taking everything in, peppering the master with questions. 'Penn was Mr. Technique,' says Arbeit. 'Everything he does is so meticulous, so perfect”.

After working for Penn, Arbeit moved to Milan to launch his own fashion photography career, and shot regularly for Linea Italia, Donna and Vogue Bellezza. In 1985, he settled in Paris to further his career as well as expand his artistic boundaries. To explore the experimental side of photography Arbeit and a few ambitious photographer friends from the Art Center formed a group called 'The Cauldron.' Its mission was simple: to take pictures that had never been done before. Arbeit chose focus as his tool, and launched Out of Focus, a series of photographs in which in the foreground Arbeit focuses sharply on a flower and in the background, an out-of-focus female nude mimics the shape and movement of the bloom. 'I wanted to show the form out of focus and let the viewer fill in the gaps, create something dreamy,' Arbeit explains.

Arbeit continued to work commercially, shooting fashion for French Vogue and Marie Claire, and portraits for In Style, People and Forbes. In 1992, he launched a second series, 'Artists' Studios,' of female nudes in artist ateliers. 'When I go into the atelier, I try to do two images,' Arbeit says. 'One is a portrait of the artist without the artist in the picture, and I achieve this by showing his paints, his tools, the room, his sculptures and paintings. The second is the female form. I wanted to bring the model back into the atelier. The light in these spaces draw the female form so well.'

Following the Atelier series, Arbeit launched a project he calls 'Polajunk Constructions': a collection of photomontages made of all the bits that come in a Polaroid box. 'So much junk!' says Arbeit with a laugh. 'Why not use the aluminum and the tissue paper, and glue it into a mess and see if there's something to it?' Most recently Arbeit has been working on a study of Hawaii, his adopted home. For it, he has photographed Hawaiians at play and in thought, the stunning mountainous landscapes and the flawless beaches. 'What's fascinating about Hawaii is all the different mixtures of cultures, the island people,' says Arbeit. And of course, the light.

Hij is geboren in Chicago en trok met het gezin naar Hawaï op 16 jarige leeftijd. De adembenemende schoonheid van dit eiland in de Stille Oceaan prikkelde zijn zintuigen en deed zijn passie voor fotografie ontluiken. Hij studeerde het vak aan de Universiteit van Hawaï om zijn techniek daarna
te perfectioneren aan het “Art Center College of Design” in Pasadena (Californië).

Daar ontmoette hij ook Helmut Newton, met wie hij bevriend raakte en die hem vroeg zijn assistent te worden... Arbeit beschouwde Newton als zijn geestelijke vader in deze discipline.

Daarna werd hij de assistent van Irving Penn. “Ik noemde hem Mijnheer Techniek, omdat alles wat hij deed zo akelig precies moest zijn”, herinnert Arbeit zich. Vervolgens ging hij zijn eigen weg, richting Milaan, waar zijn carrière als modefotograaf echt van start ging.

“Ik werkte regelmatig voor Linea Italia, Donna en Vogue Bellezza. In 1985 heb ik me in Parijs gevestigd om mijn artistieke kennis te verdiepen en om de experimentele kant van de fotografie te verkennen”. Arbeit richtte toen een artiestengroep op, “Le chaudron”, met een eenvoudige missie:
fotograferen wat nog nooit voordien werd gefotografeerd; innoveren! Arbeit ontwikkelde zijn eigen stijl door te spelen met voor- en achterplan. Dat creëerde een zeer bijzondere fotografische sfeer, alsof het geheel in een droomwereld vertoeft. In 1992 lanceerde hij een serie foto’s met vrouwelijk naakt in decors van artiestenstudio’s. Er worden harmonieuze lichamen getoond, echte natuurlijke kunstwerken, die poseren naast creaties van artiesten. Een detonerende mix. “Het licht dat heerst in deze ateliers laat de lichamen bijzonder goed tot hun recht komen”, is de sobere commentaar van Arbeit.

Daarna gooide hij het artistieke roer om en realiseerde hij een serie fotomontages, de “Polajunk Constructions”, op basis van clichés gemaakt met polaroid. “Een echt allegaartje...”, noemt hij het lachend. Recent is Arbeit teruggekeerd naar Hawaï, zijn tweede vaderland. Hij fotografeerde er de typische gewoonten van de autochtonen, de grootse berglandschappen en de uitgestrekte zandvlakten. “Het is een fascinerend eiland omwille van zijn culturele diversiteit, de mentaliteit van zijn inwoners en natuurlijk zijn schitterend licht”, verklaart deze zwervende artiest.

« Je travaillais régulièrement pour Linea Italia, Donna et Vogue Bellezza. En 1985, je me suis installé à Paris, pour approfondir mes connaissances artistiques et pour explorer le coté expérimental de la photographie ». Arbeit a alors créé un groupe d’artistes,dénommé «Le chaudron» et dont la mission était simple: photographier ce qui ne l’avait jamais été ; innover !

Arbeit développa son style en jouant sur les avant-plans et arrièreplans,créant une ambiance photographique toute particulière et évoquant le rêve. En 1992, il lança une série de photos représentant des nus féminins mis en scène au coeur de studios d’artiste. On y découvre des corps harmonieux, véritables chefs d’oeuvre naturels, qui prennent place aux côtés des créations d’artistes. Un mélange détonnant. « La lumière qui règne dans ces ateliers met particulièrement les corps en valeur», commente simplement Arbeit.

L’artiste changea ensuite de cap, en se lançant dans une série de photomontages, dénommés
« Polajunk Constructions » et rassemblant des clichés réalisés au moyen de polaroids. « Un véritable bric-à-brac... », lance-t-il en souriant.

Plus récemment, Arbeit est revenu à Hawaii, sa terre d’adoption. Il y a photographié les us et coutumes des autochtones, la grandeur des paysages montagneux et les longues étendues de sable.
« L’île est fascinante par sa diversité culturelle, la mentalité de ses habitants et, bien sûr, sa lumière éclatante », déclare cet artiste itinérant et passionnant.
