Florian Böhm, born in 1969, lives and works in Munich and New York. He has exhibited his work at various international institutions including KunstWerke Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin), Storefront for Art and Architecture (New York), Haus der Kunst (Munich), Fondazione Adriano Olivetti (Rome), and Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain (Paris).

He was co-founder of the project EndCommercial® / Reading the City, a visual record of modern urban life widely acclaimed in journals and papers such as the New York Times, Domus, Art Forum, and Kunstforum International. The project contains over 60,000 images, and established a new visual vocabulary to describe our urban experience. Böhm’s recent publications as editor or author include KGID Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design (Phaidon Press 2005).


In the new collection Wait for Walk, Florian Böhm expands the typology of the urban area with an anthropological look at city people, in the form of studies of fluctuating, transient constellations of passers-by waiting at intersections in New York. The sidewalk becomes a stage on which the pulsating activity of the metropolis comes to a standstill for a brief moment. The flow of traffic became the shutter curtain, and the outcome is moments of great authenticity. It is great drama that takes place before our eyes, an interplay of rhetorical gestures and forms of behavior. A particular attraction of Böhm’s new works lies in the accidental combination of a number people with the aesthetics of a staged setting.

Florian Böhm werd in 1969 in Duitsland geboren en woont en werkt in München en New York.
Hij verwierf bekendheid als medeauteur, samen met Luca Pizzaroni en Wolfgang Scheppe, van de fotostudie Endcommercial®, Reading the City. Dit werk getuigt van zijn onfeilbare kijk op het stadsleven, dat zo rijk is aan verhalen.

De drie kunstenaars kozen New York als onderwerp en tonen met hun studie aan wat de stedeling doet “om op straat te overleven”: hij maakt van zijn omgeving een instrument en vormt en vervormt ze door middel van voorwerpen: lantaarnpalen, vuilnisbakken, pijpen, uithangborden, plastic zakken, enz. Zodra deze voorwerpen in een typologisch systeem zijn geïnventariseerd, onthullen ze de sociale en culturele tegenstrijdigheden van de stad. Op die manier wordt de voorbijganger verrast en ontdekt hij als het ware een stadslandschap dat hij wel elke dag ziet, maar waar hij nooit naar kijkt.

Dit collectieve werk werd met succes tentoongesteld in enkele vermaarde musea en bij beroemde stichtingen, in Berlijn, New York, München, Rome en Parijs. De Duitse uitgever Hatje Cantz publiceerde het werk en de Engelse fotograaf Martin Paar en kunstcriticus Gerry Badger namen deze publicatie op in hun selectie van de beste fotoboeken van de voorbije dertig jaar (The Photobook: A History – Volume III – 2006).

De foto’s van Florian Böhm waren te bewonderen in het Haus der Kunst in München, in het Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York, bij de Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain in Parijs, in het Kunstwerke Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlijn en bij de Fondazione Adriano Olivetti in Rome. Onlangs nog waren ze tentoongesteld in het Fotomuseum van München (januari 2008).


Nu stelt Florian Böhm zijn nieuwste fotocollectie voor het eerst voor in België, in de Young Gallery. Nogmaals richt hij zijn aandacht op de inwoners van New York en hij kiekt ze – zonder dat zij het beseffen – in vluchtige en voorbijgaande groepen die, al dan niet geduldig, staan te wachten tot ze de toestemming krijgen om de kruispunten van hun stad over te steken. De fotograaf heeft voor dit geheel van clichés zeer strikte omstandigheden afgebakend, maar het toeval – dat de surrealisten zo na aan het hart ligt – wordt echter niet aan de kant geschoven. Hierdoor wordt niet alleen de objectiviteit van de opnames, maar ook die van de veranderlijke stadsrealiteit gegarandeerd.

In “Wait for Walk” bezitten de vluchtige constellaties van stilstaande voetgangers – gehelen die zij ongewild vormen om dan weer uiteen te vallen – niet alleen de formele en verbluffende schoonheid van het ogenblik, maar ook de psychologische rijkdom van ongekende levens en de fascinerende charme van het “romantische” potentieel.

Dat Florian Böhm antropoloog is, lijdt niet de minste twijfel, maar hij is bovenal een fantastisch kunstenaar die de Amerikaanse traditie van de straatfoto’s – denk maar aan Helen Levitt, Sid Grossman, Lisette Model en William Klein – voortzet. Wat hem echter het meest kenmerkt, is zijn tegelijkertijd originele en verholen wil om de kern van het toevallige en het accidentele in scène te zetten. Daarom doen zijn werken ons denken aan de levende “groepsportretten” uit de Nederlandse schilderkunst, ten tijde van Rembrandt.

Florian Böhm est né en Allemagne en 1969 ; il vit et travaille à Munich et à New York.

Il s’est fait connaître, avec Luca Pizzaroni et Wolfgang Scheppe, comme co-auteur de l’étude photographique Endcommercial®, Reading the City, réalisation dans laquelle il manifeste un œil infaillible pour la vie urbaine chargée d’histoires.

Adoptant New York comme sujet, les trois artistes démontrent que « pour survivre dans la rue » le citadin instrumentalise son environnement, le forme et le déforme au moyen des objets : lampadaires, poubelles, tuyaux, enseignes, sacs plastiques, etc... Et que ces objets, dès lors qu’ils sont inventoriés grâce à un système typologique, révèlent les contradictions sociales et culturelles de la ville. C’est ainsi que le passant, pris par surprise, découvre le paysage urbain qu’il voit tous les jours mais qu’il ne regarde jamais.

Ce travail collectif a été exposé avec succès dans plusieurs musées et institutions de renom, à Berlin, New-York, Munich, Rome et Paris, et a été publié par l’éditeur allemand Hatje Cantz. Le photographe anglais Martin Paar et le critique d’art Gerry Badger ont inclus cette publication dans leur sélection des meilleurs livres de photos des trente dernières années (The Photobook: A History – Volume III - 2006).

Dans la série de photographies qu’il présente pour la première fois en Belgique, à la Young Gallery, Florian Böhm s’intéresse à nouveau aux  habitants de New York et les saisit, à leur insu, en groupes fluides et transitoires, attendant, plus ou moins patiemment, l’autorisation de traverser les carrefours de leur ville. Si cet ensemble de clichés a été conçu dans des conditions rigoureusement définies par le photographe lui-même, le hasard -cher aux surréalistes- n’en n’est cependant pas exclu, double gage de l’objectivité des prises de vue et de la fluctuante réalité urbaine.

Dans « Wait for Walk », les constellations éphémères des piétons à l’arrêt, les ensembles qu’ils composent involontairement avant de se disperser, possèdent, outre la stupéfiante beauté formelle de l’instant, la richesse psychologique des vies inconnues et le charme fascinant de leur potentialité « romanesque ».

Anthropologue, à n’en pas douter, Florian Böhm est essentiellement un magnifique artiste, dans la tradition américaine des photographes de rue, de Helen Levitt, Sid Grossman, Lisette Model et William Klein. Mais ce qui, à l’évidence, le caractérise, c’est une volonté, à la fois originale et secrète, d’introduire une mise en scène au coeur du fortuit et de l’accidentel. Aussi, ses œuvres nous rappellent-elles les vivants « Portraits de groupes » de la peinture hollandaise, au temps de Rembrandt.
