David Drebin, originally from Toronto, Canada, graduated from Parson School of Design in New York City in 1996 and has been based in New York City ever since.

After success in the commercial world doing ad campaigns internationally for companies from American Express, Davidoff, New York Times to name a few as well as magazines from Vanity Fair, Travel and Leisure, GQ, Elle, Rolling Stone and many others David has gone on to have exhibitions in Los Angeles and Berlin.

David's first monograph "Love and Other Stories" will be published by DAAB and will be released in May 2007.

I decided to become a  photographer over 10 years ago strictly because I wanted to understand my own imagination and what I really thought about other human beings.I guess one could call it Fashion photography  even though I have yet to put myself in any category.I love Fashion but I am more fascinated by the people who wear the fashion than the actual fashion hence the photograph of the person who happens to wear the fashion without intending to be a fashion photograph but merely a photograph...self involved but not self conscious necessarily.

I like pictures that are often dupilicitous and have hidden meanings that are ultimately gripping and stay in mind far beyond the moment of looking at the picture for the first time.I like the pictures that the picture I am looking at makes me think about in my own imagination. l  I like pictures that often say one thing but mean another...maybe that is what is now referred to as "narrative" photography.

I am a big fan of Richard Avedon because of his process of taking pictures probably more than any individual image he ever took.He always seemed to want to bring something out of the person more than just take a pretty picture.I like his seemingly constant attempt to reveal some sort of truth.I am after the same thing. i also love the pictures of Guy Bourdin even though I have no idea what his process was for doing what he did.
I just liked the glamourous element  within his work.

I don't really have a favourite image that I have taken so far but I guess the girl flashing cars over the highway is one because it is a person living and loving it it seems to me. I also love the girl in the red dress...where is she going?? Where is she coming from??

I like the pictures within my pictures. I hope you do too.

David Drebin is geboren in Toronto, Canada. Hij studeerde af aan de Parson’s School of Design in New York. Gedurende een korte periode was hij heel populair als commercieel fotograaf en werd hij een bekende figuur in de wereld van de fotografie.

Tien jaar geleden besliste ik om fotograaf te worden, gewoon omdat ik mijn eigen verbeelding wou begrijpen en wou weten wat ik werkelijk dacht over andere mensen. Ik vermoed dat je dat modefotografie kan noemen, hoewel ik nog niet tot een categorie behoor. Ik hou van mode, maar de mensen die mode dragen, boeien mij meer dan de eigenlijke mode. Ik ben dus degene die een foto maakt van een persoon die toevallig een modecreatie draagt, zonder dat ik een modefotograaf wil zijn, maar eerder gewoon een fotograaf... die bij de zaak betrokken is, maar het niet noodzakelijk beseft.

Ik hou van dubbelzinnige foto’s met een verborgen betekenis. Ze grijpen je aan en blijven in je geheugen gegrift lang nadat je ze voor het eerst zag. Ik hou ervan dat de foto waarnaar ik kijk, mijn eigen verbeelding aan het werk zet. Ik hou van foto’s die iets zeggen, maar iets anders bedoelen... Misschien bedoelen ze dat met “narratieve” fotografie.

Ik ben een grote fan van Richard Avedon, wellicht meer wegens de techniek die hij gebruikt om foto’s te maken dan om de foto’s zelf. Hij geeft altijd de indruk dat hij iets uit de persoon wil halen en niet gewoon een mooie foto wil maken. Ik hou van zijn duidelijke en constante pogingen om ergens een waarheid zichtbaar te maken.

Dat probeer ik ook te doen. Ik hou ook van de foto’s van Guy Bourdin, ook al weet ik niet welke methode hij hanteert. Ik hou gewoon van de glamour in zijn werk.
Van de foto’s die ik heb gemaakt, beschouw ik geen enkele als mijn lievelingsfoto. Of misschien die van het meisje dat boven de snelweg die zich toont aan de voorbijrijdende chauffeurs, omdat ik de indruk heb dat zij leeft en opgaat in wat ze doet. Ook hou ik van het meisje in de rode jurk... Waar gaat zij naartoe? Waar komt zij vandaan?

Ik hou van de beelden in mijn beelden. Ik hoop dat u dat ook doet.

Il y a plus de dix ans, j’ai décidé de devenir photographe uniquement parce que je désirais comprendre le fonctionnement de mon imagination et découvrir ce que je pensais vraiment des autres humains. Je crois qu’on peut appeler cela de « la photographie de mode » encore que je ne fasse actuellement partie d’aucune catégorie. J’aime la mode mais suis davantage fasciné par les gens qui la portent que par son langage présent. Je suis celui qui photographie la personne qui porte les vêtements des créateurs sans avoir l’intention d’être un photographe de mode, simplement un photographe !

J’aime les photographies qui sont souvent ambiguës et renferment un sens caché. Elles sont finalement captivantes et demeurent gravées dans la mémoire après les avoir regardées pour la première fois.

J’aime tellement les photos que toutes celles que je découvre me renvoient à ma propre imagination. J’aime les photos qui parlent d’une chose tout en esquissant une autre. C’est cela qu’on appelle peut-être « la photographie narrative ».

Je suis un fan inconditionnel de Richard Avedon, davantage pour sa technique que pour chacune des photos qu’il a réalisées. Il donne toujours l’impression de vouloir faire ressortir quelque chose de la personne, bien plus que de faire simplement une belle photo. J’aime sa tentative apparemment constante de révéler une sorte de vérité.

C’est également ce que je recherche. J’adore aussi les photos de Guy Bourdin, bien que je n’aie aucune idée de la méthode qu’il a utilisée.

J’apprécie juste le glamour qui transparaît dans son travail.
De toutes les photos que j’ai prises jusqu’à présent, je n’en ai pas de préférées, à l’exception peut-être de la fille qui s’exhibe au-dessus de l’autoroute, parce qu’il me semble que c’est une personne qui vit et apprécie ce moment. J’adore également la femme vêtue d’une robe rouge. Où va-t-elle ? D’où vient-elle ?

J’aime les images contenues dans mes photos. Vous aussi je l’espère.
