Daniel & Geo Fuchs - TOYGIANTS

La série de photos TOYGIANTS de Daniel et Geo Fuchs plonge le visiteur dans l’univers de personnages vendus comme jouets partout dans le monde, univers qui est à sa manière hautement politisé. Les artistes ont photographié ces jouets et réalisés des tirages grand format représentant des héros de BD américaines des années 60, des personnages fantastiques tout en muscles, des stars de l’univers japonais des Mangas, mais aussi des acteurs et metteurs en scène comme Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Quentin Tarantino. Même des artistes comme Andy Warhol, des leaders mondiaux comme George W. Bush et son ennemi Saddam Hussein sont présentés ici tels des ‘jouets’.
Les artistes Daniel et Geo Fuchs ont commencé leur série TOYGIANTS avec Batman, Superman et Hulk. La foi en le progrès est inscrite sur leur visage, tout comme l’idéalisme qui anime les héros de BD. Il en est tout autrement des visages fatigués, usés de Bruce Willis ou Stallone, d’un soldat de l’époque de la Guerre Froide. Et la frontière entre réalité et fiction disparaît complètement avec les portraits de Saddam Hussein ou de Osama Ben Laden.
Les personnages photographiés par Daniel et Geo Fuchs proviennent tous de la Collection Varol, qui inclut à ce jour plus de 10.000 objets. Dans les chambres de l’artiste munichois, le prince Franz von Stuck -qui a compris avant tout autre artiste de son époque le concept de l’autopromotion- les œuvres de la série TOYGIANTS révèlent l’impact somme toute terrifiant que confère aux figures leur statut d’icône.
L’exposition provoque des questions sur le pouvoir de l’autopromotion médiatique de personnages politiques ou d’acteurs dans un univers de l’image dominé par les loisirs et les jeux guerriers. Les stratégies iconographiques d’un président descendant d’un avion de chasse en tenue militaire sont soumises à un examen minutieux par Daniel et Geo Fuchs pourleur photo de George W. Bush se créant une image de guerrier. Ils laissent aux visiteurs le soin d’interpréter les visages pâles et vides d’expression : où s’arrête la réalité, où commence la mise en scène ?.
TOYGIANTS met à l’épreuve notre manière de regarder.

Als uitgangspunt voor hun fotoreeks TOYGIANTS gebruikten kunstenaars Daniel en Geo Fuchs de toch wel politiek geladen wereld van speelgoedfiguurtjes die internationaal worden verkocht en verhandeld. De kunstenaars creëerden grootformaatportretten van speelgoed: Amerikaanse striphelden uit de jaren zestig, gespierde fantasiefiguurtjes, Japanse mangasupersterren, acteurs en regisseurs als Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone en Quentin Tarantino en zelfs wereldleiders als George W. Bush en zijn tegenstander Saddam Hoessein of kunstenaars als Andy Warhol, … stuk voor stuk worden ze als “speelgoed” voorgesteld.
Kunstenaars Daniel en Geo Fuchs begonnen hun werk aan TOYGIANTS met Batman, Superman en de Hulk. Het geloof in de vooruitgang is op de gezichten van deze figuren af te lezen en de striphelden stralen idealisme uit. Het is opvallend hoe verschillend de uitgeputte en afgeleefde gezichten van Willis of Stallone zijn, en een soldaat uit de tijd van de Koude Oorlog heeft blijkbaar niets meer om handen. Maar de grenzen tussen werkelijkheid en fictie gaan echt helemaal in rook op wanneer de portretten van figuren als Saddam Hoessein of Osama bin Laden worden getoond.
De speelgoedfiguurtjes die Daniel en Geo Fuchs op de gevoelige plaat vastlegden, zijn allemaal afkomstig uit de Collectie Varol, die ondertussen meer dan 10.000 objecten telt. In de kamers van de Münchense kunstenaar-“prins” Franz von Stuck, die als geen ander wist wat het concept zelfpromotie inhoudt, ontsluieren de TOYGIANTS-creaties hun enigszins angstwekkende beeldende effect.
De tentoonstelling draait om vragen over de kracht die, in een netwerkwereld van vermaak en “oorlogsspelletjes”, uitgaat van zelfpromotie via politieke figuren of acteurs. De iconografische strategieën van een president die uit een gevechtsvliegtuig klautert, uitgerust met militair materiaal, ontsnappen niet aan de kritische blik van Daniel en Geo Fuchs, als ze een foto maken van een origineel uitgedoste George W. Bush. De interpretatie van de lege, bleke gezichten laten ze over aan de bezoekers: wat is echt en wat is geënsceneerd ?.

As the point of departure for their photo series TOYGIANTS , the artists Daniel and Geo Fuchs use the, to a certain extent, highly political world of toy figures, which are sold and traded internationally. The artists created portraits of toys in large-sized prints: American comic heroes of the 1960s; muscle-bound fantasy figures; Japanese Manga superstars; actors and directors such as Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Quentin Tarantino; even world-leaders such as George W. Bush and his opponent Saddam Hussein; or artists such as Andy Warhol who are presented as "toys".
The artists Daniel and Geo Fuchs began their work on TOYGIANTS with Batman , Superman and Hulk. The belief in progress is written on the faces of these figures, as is the idealism with which comic heroes are charged. How different the worn-out and spent faces of Willis or Stallone, a soldier of the Cold War era for whom it seems no task remains. And the borders between reality and fiction disappear completely when the portraits of figures of Saddam Hussein or Osama bin Laden are shown.
The toy figures photographed by Daniel and Geo Fuchs all come from the Collection Varol, which in the meantime includes over 10,000 objects. In the rooms of Munich's artist/prince Franz von Stuck, who like no other artist of his day understood the concept of self-promotion, the works in TOYGIANTS unfold their, to a certain extent, terrifying, iconic effect.
At the centre of the exhibition are questions regarding the power of self-promotion through the media by political figures or actors in a networked world of entertainment and "war games". The iconographic strategies of a president climbing out of a fighter plane equipped with military gear are scrutinised by Daniel and Geo Fuchs in their photograph of an originally packaged George W. Bush. They leave the interpretation of the empty, pale-white faces to the visitor: what is real and what is staged ?.
TOYGIANTS puts us and our viewing habits to the test.
