Introduction :
William Ingram's portraits are the result of a collaboration between himself, attempting to lay bare the uniqueness of each of his subjects, and the individuals whom he records in a quiet performance, as themselves. Though most of his subjects are nude they all project a psychological, as opposed to merely physical, presence. Ingram's work creates a dialogue between the photographer and the sitter, a gradual process of assimilation by the artist and of self-discovery by the model, a symbiotic partnership whereby the defining image will be something they work out together and elaborate by mutual agreement. From his privileged position as a confidential witness and interpreter of his subjects inner life, Ingram orchestrates his technical resources in response to the expressive potential inherent in that actual person, so as to harness each subject's ability for self-expression. The result, more than a likeness or an expression, is an unselfconscious self-portrait of the sitter in complicity with the photographer.
