He ended his engineering career in the nineties to devote himself to his real passion : photography. He is now considered one of the most renowned photographers in Europe. Over the years, he has developed his own unique and recognisable style of capturing female beauty : razor sharp as well as cinematic. His photos combine the imagery of directors such as Wong Kar-Wai and the distinguished melancholic style of the elaborated photographs of New York’s Philip-Lorca diCorcia.
Marc brings sensual femininity to a higher level, with many of his pictures mirroring a clearly sexual vibe without being explicit. They all breathe an intrinsic peace. Much like the work of his other sources of inspiration : Helmut Newton and - especially - Peter Lindbergh.

He chooses models with great personalities that can be reflected in his pictures. Eyes and gestures can speak a clearer language than words, and it's because of this that he loves to work with dancers, actresses or very experienced models. These choices, together with his lighting techniques, are responsible for the cinematographic look of his work.
Marc always gets the best out of his models and is dedicated to exposing the pure beauty that inhabits all women. With one commission following another at top speed, Marc continues working at his personal work in his stylish studio – a former furniture factory in the city centre of Antwerp.

Dès les années quatre-vingts, décennie où il se consacre définitivement à la photographie, Marc Lagrange crée des portraits et des nus intrigants de ses muses, femmes fatales insaisissables, pétries de secrets et de fantasmes, avec une tendance sous-jacente à la décadence. Sa volonté de toucher s'affirme dans sa série "And God created.... Women", qui abonde en nus féminins et même masculins.
Dans les années quatre-vingt-dix, il se passionne pour le Polaroid, qui reste son médium préféré, à côté de la photographie analogique de grand format. Pour ses "icônes", Marc Lagrange recherche systématiquement le lieu et le casting idéal, les meilleurs éclairage et perspective, la pose juste.

Son objectif ultime ? Elever la sensualité à un niveau supérieur, donner à chaque photo le petit quelque chose en plus qui transcende la réalité, créer une expérience unique. De sa position parfois voyeuriste, le spectateur est absorbé dans un univers d'intérieurs somptueux, généralement baroques, peuplés de femmes éblouissantes, qui sont chic et magiques, mais aussi humaines et fragiles ... Des femmes à forte personnalité, dont les yeux trahissent les désirs.
Dans la foulée du cinéma, chaque photo fait l'objet d'une mise en scène de style, sur place ou en studio, dans de magnifiques décors, distillant l'érotisme mais jamais obscènes, un univers onirique fascinant.

Vrouwen zijn de grote inspiratiebron van de in Antwerpen woonachtige fotograaf Marc Lagrange (Kinshasa, Congo, 1957). Oorspronkelijk opgeleid tot ingenieur, maakte hij van zijn echte passie zijn beroep.
Zijn meer dan levensgrote analoge foto’s vertellen verhalen waarvan het “plot” ontbreekt. Foto’s als een film stil. Er is net iets gebeurd, of er staat iets te gebeuren. Hij toont ons prachtige vrouwen, gedeeltelijk of geheel ontkleed. Erotisch getint, maar tegelijkertijd met een magische kwetsbaarheid en met een enorme waardigheid. Ze blijven onaantastbaar. Ongenaakbaar - alsof de fotograaf afstand wil scheppen tot zijn objecten. De intimiteit is slechts aanwezig in de enscenering. Marc Lagrange ziet zijn vrouwen als pure verleidsters maar tegelijkertijd verleidelijk puur; een mengeling van tedere kracht en ijzeren wil.

Zijn gebruik van licht en belijning toont iedere vrouw op haar allermooist. De sfeer is die van een filmdecor, barok en luxueus. Zijn fotografie is sterk geënt op cinematografische technieken, niet alleen in de opbouw van zijn foto’s, maar ook vooral in het licht. In zijn opnamen maakt hij vaak gebruik van langere sluitertijden om het licht te laten uitdijen.
Lagrange heeft een voorkeur voor zwart-wit fotografie, omdat dit geen stempel op de foto drukt, niet afleidt van wat hij wil tonen. Zijn werk vormt een ode aan schoonheid.
