Concealed at the bottom of the earth where the globe maker attaches the orb to its frame, Antarctica remains untouched by the cacophony of our time: A breathing space for the planet, as much as for the human imagination.

In antiquity, a passion for symmetry demanded that the globe contain a landmass at the South Pole to balance the known lands of the north. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Antarctica?s supposed existence inspired poets and tantalized explorers. In the early 20th, the exploration of its interior and the quest for the South Pole were precursors to the race to the moon. Today, Antarctica demands our attention as the only continent that has not been made a country: Emblem of international cooperation, but also climate archive; early warning system; ground zero of earthly complexity - idea, as much as place.

For me, Antarctica is an object of continued visual and intellectual fascination: A wilderness that, however much it is scrutinized and deconstructed, remains unmoved in its glacial quietude, its penetrating silence, and its ability to draw us, one degree at a time, toward the essential.

With this ongoing series of black and white images, I have sought to interpret the Antarctic experience in all its haunting simplicity: An encounter with an elemental realm devoid of vegetation or habitation - without references of scale or perspective. A Topography of Absence that I seek to transmit in it minimalist, often abstract essence.

Biography

Born in Paris in 1969, Jean de Pomereu first visited Antarctica in 2003. He has returned on numerous occasions as a member of different artistic and scientific expeditions. In December 2006, he was the official photographer for Lita Albuquerque?s Stellar Axis Antarctica: the largest and most ambitious arts project ever undertaken in Antarctica. In 2008, within the context of the 4th International Polar Year, he was the first foreign reporter and photographer to accompany a Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition.

With a Masters degree from the Scott Polar Research Institute, Jean also reports on the subject of polar science for SciencePoles.org (the scientific news and information website of the International Polar Foundation), lectures on the visual interpretation of Antarctica, and is involved in editorial projects focusing on early Antarctic photography.

His photographs have been exhibited in France, Belgium, Spain, the UK, China and New Zealand. The platinum prints for his Topography of Absence series are produced by Salto Ulbeek printers and publishers in Belgium.

"Nous vivons dans un monde surchargé, tous les jours confrontés à des déferlantes d'images débordantes de formes, de couleurs, de messages. Peut-être mon travail est-il, en premier lieu, une réponse à cette cacophonie : La recherche d'une élémentaire simplicité.

Découvert il y a moins de deux siècles, dissimulé aux antipodes, l'Antarctique est l'ultime tabula rasa. Le plus désincarné des étendues sauvages. Un univers minéral dont la vie est presque absente ; berceau des vents et des glaces ; incarnation de la nature en son état le plus dénudé. Un sanctuaire quasi-immaculé qui, à mon sens, évoque au mieux l'imperceptible frontière entre le visible et l'invisible.

C'est là, au sein de cette « Topographie de l'Absence » que j'ai trouvé un sujet photographique à même d'évoquer cette élémentaire simplicité ? Et aussi un refuge contre la cacophonie du monde".

Biographie

Jean de Pomereu consacre son travail photographique à l'Antarctique depuis 2003. Il y a séjourné à de nombreuses occasions, au sein d'expéditions artistiques et scientifiques. En décembre 2006, Jean fut photographe officiel d'une installation créé par la « land-artist » Américaine, Lita Albuquerque, intitulée Stellar Axis. Le plus important projet artistique jamais réalisé en Antarctique. En 2008, dans le contexte de la 4eme Année Polaire Internationale, il fut aussi le premier reporter étranger à accompagner une expédition polaire chinoise en Antarctique.

Diplômé du Scott Polar Research Institute à l'université de Cambridge, Jean est par ailleurs journaliste auprès du site scientifique de la Fondation Polaire Internationale. Il a écrit de nombreux textes sur la recherche en Antarctique, ainsi que sur la représentation de ce continent dans l'art et la photographie. Il lui arrive aussi de donner des conférences à ce sujet.

Le travail photographique de Jean a été exposé en France, en Grande-Bretagne, en Belgique, en Espagne, en Nouvelle-Zélande, et en Chine.

Weggestopt helemaal onderaan de aardbol, waar de aarde door haar schepper werd vastgehaakt, blijft Antarctica gespaard van de kakofonie die onze tijd kenmerkt. Het continent biedt een adempauze, niet alleen voor onze planeet, maar ook voor de menselijke verbeelding.

In de oudheid was men bezeten van symmetrie en ging men ervan uit dat de aarde aan de Zuidpool een uitgestrekte landmassa omvatte als tegengewicht voor het bekende land in het noorden. In de 18de en de 19de eeuw vormde het veronderstelde bestaan van Antarctica een bron van inspiratie voor dichters en het prikkelde de verbeelding van ontdekkingsreizigers. De exploratie van Antarctica en de zoektocht naar de Zuidpool in het begin van de 20ste eeuw kunnen we zien als een voorbode van de latere race naar de maan. Vandaag trekt Antarctica onze aandacht als enige continent dat niet tot één land is gemaakt: het is een symbool van internationale samenwerking, maar doet ook dienst als klimaatarchief, vroeg waarschuwingssysteem, het ground zero van de complexiteit van de aarde ? het is zowel een idee als een plaats.

Met deze lopende reeks zwart-witfoto?s heb ik de Antarctische ervaring in al haar obsederende eenvoud willen interpreteren: een confrontatie met een elementair gebied dat verstoken is van begroeiing of bewoning ? zonder schaal of perspectief. Een Topografie van Afwezigheid die ik wil overbrengen in heel haar minimalistische, vaak abstracte essentie.

Jean de Pomereu werd in 1969 in Parijs geboren en bezocht Antarctica voor het eerst in 2003. Hij is er meermaals teruggekeerd als lid van verschillende artistieke en wetenschappelijke expedities. In december 2006 was hij de officiële fotograaf voor Lita Albuquerque?s Stellar Axis Antarctica: het grootste en meest ambitieuze kunstproject dat ooit op de Zuidpool werd ondernomen. Naar aanleiding van het 4de Internationale Pooljaar in 2008 was hij de eerste buitenlandse verslaggever en fotograaf die een Chinese nationale poolexpeditie (Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition) mocht begeleiden.

Jean heeft een master van het Scott Polar Research Institute en brengt ook verslag uit over poolwetenschap voor SciencePoles.org (de website van de International Polar Foundation voor wetenschappelijk nieuws en informatie), geeft lezingen over de visuele interpretatie van Antarctica en is betrokken bij redactionele projecten die zich toeleggen op vroege foto?s van de Zuidpool.

Zijn foto's werden al tentoongesteld in Frankrijk, België, Spanje, Groot-Brittannië, China en Nieuw-Zeeland. De platinadrukken voor zijn fotoreeks Topography of Absence werden geproduceerd door de Belgische drukkerij en uitgeverij Salto Ulbeek.
