Born in Lyon, France, Marc Riboud went to high school there and made his first picture in 1937 using his father's Vest Pocket Kodak camera. He was active in the French Resistance from 1943 to 1945, then studied engineering at the Ecole Centrale from 1945 to 1948.
Until 1951 Riboud worked as an engineer in Lyon factories, but took a week-long picture-taking vacation, inspiring him to become a photographer.[1] He moved to Paris where he met Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, and David Seymour, the founders of Magnum Photos. By 1953 he was a member of the organization. His ability to capture fleeting moments in life through powerful compositions was already apparent, and this skill was to serve him well for decades to come.

Over the next several decades Riboud traveled around the world. In 1957 he was one of the first eurosopean photographers to go to China, and In 1968, 1972 and 1976, Riboud made several reportages on North Vietnam and later traveled all over the world, but mostly in Asia, Africa, the U.S. and Japan.
Riboud has been witness to the atrocities of war (photographing from both the Vietnam and the American sides of the Vietnam War), and the apparent degradation of a culture repressed from within (China during the years of Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution).
In contrast, he has captured the graces of daily life, set in sun-drenched facets of the globe (Fès, Angkor, Acapulco, Niger, Bénarès, Shaanxi), and the lyricism of child's play in everyday Paris. In 1979 Riboud left the Magnum agency.

Riboud's photographs have appeared in numerous magazines, including Life, Géo, National Geographic, Paris Match, and Stern. He twice won the Overseas Press Club Award, and has had major retrospective exhibitions at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the International Center of Photography in New York.

FR BIOGRAPHIE Marc Riboud est né en 1923 à Lyon. A l'Exposition Universelle de Paris en 1937, il prend ses premières photographies avec le petit Vest-Pocket offert par son père pour ses 14 ans. En 1944, il participe aux combats dans le Vercors. De 1945 à 1948, il fait des études d'ingénieuros à l'Ecole Centrale de Lyon et travaille en usine. A l'issue d'une semaine de vacances prise pour photographier le Festival de Lyon, il oublie de retourner à l'usine et décide de se consacrer à la photographie. En 1953, il obtient une publication dans le magazine Life pour une photo d'un peintre de la Tour Eiffel. Sur l'invitation d'Henri Cartier-Bresson et de Robert Capa, il rentre à Magnum. Ce dernier l'envoie à Londres "pour voir les filles et apprendre l'anglais". Il n'apprend pas l'anglais mais photographie intensément. En 1955, via le Moyen-Orient et l'Afghanistan, il se rend par la route en Inde, où il reste un an et d'où il gagne la Chine pour un premier séjour en 1957. Après un séjour de trois mois en URSS en 1960, il couvre les indépendances en Algérie et en Afrique noire. Entre 1968 et 1969, il effectue des reportages au Sud ainsi qu'au Nord Vietnam, où il est l'un des rares photographes à pouvoir entrer. Depuis les années 80, il est régulièrement retourné en Orient et en Extrême-Orient et a exposé à Paris, Londres, New York, Beijing, Hong Kong, Bilbao, ... Marc Riboud a publié de nombreux livres, dont les plus connus sont "Les trois bannières de la Chine", ed. Robert Laffont, "Journal", ed. Denoël, "Huang Shan, Les Montagnes célestes", ed. Arthaud, "Angkor, Sérénité bouddhique", ed. Imprimerie Nationale, " Quarante ans de photographie en Chine", ed. Nathan, "Demain Shanghai", ed. Delpire. La rétrospective publiée en 2004 chez Flammarion et, exposée à la Maison eurosopéenne de la Photographie de Paris, accueillit 100 000 visiteuross. De nombreux musées à travers l'eurosope mais aussi aux Etats-Unis et au Japon ont exposé son travail. Il a reçu plusieuross récompenses dont deux prix de l'Overseas Press Club, le Time-Life Achievement, Lucie Award ou l'ICP Infinity Award. NL Marc Riboud is in 1923 in Lyon geboren. Vervolgens reist hij door naar China, waar hij in 1957 een eerste maal verblijft. Na drie maanden in de USSR in 1960 trekt hij naar Algerije en zwart Afrika om er de onafhankelijkheid in beelden te vatten. Tussen 1968 en 1969 maakt hij reportages in Zuid- en Noord-Vietnam. Hij is een van de weinige fotografen die het land binnen mogen. Vanaf de jaren '80 keert hij regelmatig terug naar het Oosten en het Verre Oosten, en stelt hij tentoon in Parijs, Londen, New York, Peking, Hongkong, Bilbao ... Marc Riboud heeft tal van boeken gepubliceerd. Enkele van de bekendste zijn "Les trois bannières de la Chine", uitgeverij Robert Laffont, "Journal", uitg.
